Tafuna’i ready to fly Fiji’s flag high New crowned Miss World Fiji, Charlene Tafuna’i is ready to do wonders for Fiji in the Miss World Finals in December and is calling for the nation’s backing.

The 20-year-old aircraft engineering student made her first appearance today after the crowning ceremony a fortnight ago where she and other finalists were hosted to a morning tea and were given their participation certificates.

“I am super excited to represent my country. I know the journey will not be easy but with the encouragement and support of all Fijians here and across the globe, I will surely give my best in the finals.”

“It is an absolute honour for me to be selected as Fiji’s ambassador to Miss World and I will try my utmost best to promote my country, the unique and diverse cultures that exist here and ofcourse our tourism sector which is thriving and needs more promotion.”

Tafuna’i who has paternal links to Samoa and Rotuma and maternal links to Tonga and Taveuni says her family is her inspiration and greatest source of strength and dedicates her win to them.

“My family has always been there for me. My friends are also very supportive.”

Juggling between her studies and preparation for the finals is a real challenge which she is aiming to overcome for now.

“I have exams in two weeks time. I have one more year’s studies left and I am trying my best to plan on my time so I can commit to both- my studies and Miss World preparations.”

“Apart from competing in the finals, I will also be talking about Fiji’s bid to host the Miss World Finals in 2017 and will try my best to impress the organisers.”

Miss World Fiji director Andhy Blake said preparations are well on track and they are working very closely with the CWM hospital in Suva on Miss Fiji’s Beauty with a Purpose project.

“We have chosen the initiative to assist children admitted in the hospital. Children’s ward is our area of focus and the finalists have already spent time with them and have done cleanups and decorations there.”

“Our Beauty with a Purpose project will raise funds and awareness and will help the hospital in the best way possible. All the funds raised will be scrutinized and audited by the Miss World body and funds will be released accordingly by the organizing. We believe in making a change and Miss Fiji’s project is based on bringing out smiles on the faces of needy children and making an impact in their lives,” said Blake.

Miss Fiji flies out for the Miss World Finals on November 12 and arrives in London on November 15. The 2014 Miss World will be crowned on December 12.

Meanwhile, Tafuna’i was also given $500 worth beauty products from Tappoos during the presentation ceremony.

Apart from winning the main crown, she also won the Beach Beauty, People’s Choice and Best Dressed titles in the Miss World Fiji finals.
